Face Lift Surgery

As people age, the effects of gravity, exposure to the sun, loss of elasticity of the skin, cigarette smoking and the stresses of daily life can be seen in their faces. Creases form between the nose and mouth; the jawline develops jowls, folds and fat deposits appear around the neck, and the cheek fat descends down toward the mouth. There are numerous cosmetic procedures designed to alter these changes, and sometimes the terminology is confusing. "Facelift" is the terminology used to describe a number of different techniques that are all designed to improve facial aging chages. A facelift can't stop the aging process. What it can do is "set back the clock," improving the most visible signs of aging by removing excess fat, tightening underlying muscles, and redraping the skin of the face and neck. A facelift can be done alone, or in conjunction with other procedures such as a forehead lift, eyelid surgery, or neck lift.

The Endoscopic Midface Facelift is designed to elevate the middle part of the face; the cheeks and lower eyelids are repositioned. This procedure improves the irregular contours between the lower eyelids and the cheeks. Incisions are placed in the temples, the lower eyelids and inside the mouth. The fatty tissue and suspensory tissues of the lower eyelid and cheek are tightened and repositioned. Anchoring from the cheeks to the temple brings up the contours of the cheek. The eyelid tissue is redraped and anchored. This procedure is done under local anesthesia with sedation, and early recovery takes one to three weeks, but some of the cheek swelling may take two monthe to diminish.

The S-Lift Facelift or Mini Facelift is a smaller version of the traditional facelift. In this technique, an S-shaped incision is made from the sideburn area down and around the lower ear. This incision is used to anchor and tighten the skin. Although the duration of the effects of this procedure is not as long as a traditional facelift, the recovery process and some of the potential side effects of the larger procedure are also diminished with this "mini" procedure. The S-Lift is better for the younger patient with less overlapping tissue, and minimal changes in the neck.

The traditional Facelift includes an incision from the sideburn area back around the ear lobe and into the hairline. An incision in the area under the chin is also typically used to access the neck in this procedure. In addition to tightening the skin of the mini facelift, deeper resuspension of the tissue is also accomplished with this technique. Because of the deeper surgery, recovery is more prolonged, and there is a higher risk of complications. All of the facelift techniques have possible side effects that include but are not limited to; bleeding, infection, muscle or nerve weakness, hair loss, need for further surgery, and abnormal scarring.,
