Chemical Peels

Chemical Peels Skin irregularities, wrinkling, and discoloration may be treated with chemical peels. There are different levels of treatment for different problems. Some treatments have a very brief recovery process and may be given as "lunch time peels" Other peels with more dramatic results may require a several day recovery process. Sometimes a series of light peels is recommended , and peels may be combined in the same treatment with microdermabrasion.

Superficial chemical peels are done in the office without anesthetic or sedation. The patient will experience some mild tingling or stinging. Following the treatment, the skin will look pink and slightly irritated for a few hours after the procedure. Patients are asked not to use their usual skin care products that day following the peel, but may return to regular use the next day, unless unusually irritated. The superficial peels are usually done in a series of peels over a 2 month period of time. It takes longer to get the desired improvement, but this process has minimal recovery time.

Medium depth peels are also done in an office setting. Some oral sedation may be given to diminish the burning sensation that accompanies the peeling process. Following the treatment, the superficial layers of the skin "peel" away over the next 5 to 8 days. During this process, the skin is very delicate and must be kept moist. Direct sunlight should not reach the healing skin. Patients contemplating a medium depth peel should be using skin care products prior to and after the peel to assist in the healing process. Used prior to the peel to promote faster skin growth, retinoic and glycolic acid products are stopped for weeks following the peel until the skin is less irritated. Patients should anticipate 6 to 8 weeks of post peel redness of the skin. Risks of the medium depth chemical peel include, but are not limited to, infection, scar, and pigmentary changes. The results of a medium depth chemical peel are more noticeable than a superficial peel.
